A *First Edition* U.S. History 1763 - 1877:The Short and Long of Itby Benjamin C. Eales
About Benjamin C. EalesMr. Eales said that the first book he remembers reading was Hobnailed Boots, a story of the George Rogers Clark's expedition on Fort Kaskaskia and Fort Vincennes. Growing up in the "Northwest Territory" where Indian legends and pioneer lore were as common as crab apple pie and papas, he was early interested in eighteenth and nineteenth century history. In 1969, and in 1974, he was able to take two historic trips around the states, where he concentrated on the many Revolutionary and Civil War battle grounds as well as other historical sites which reinforced his understanding of the era of which he writes. Recalling such things as the rusting muskets weathering away at Revolutionary armory in Harpers Ferry, the immense forest around Ticonderoga, the shaggy trees of the Souther swamp lands, the many vistas along the Lewis and Clark Trail, the shallow, now worn smooth, trenches of Cold Harbor, the high ground over looking the valley along the Mohawk at Hickimer's home and Oriskany, all these kinds of scenes made the writing about the battles and events much easier. During his 22 years of teaching, he realized the need for a good, and a handy, single volume history reference book, and one that approached the subject by topics. He has spent much of his retirement in putting such a book together.
